Halifax has today announced that it intends to close its Bridgend branch on 11th June 2026. The bank has said:
“Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland are part of the same group, and customers will be able to use any of our branches to carry out their everyday banking, including at our nearby Bridgend Lloyds branch.”
I have already been contacted by a number of constituents following this announcement, and I will be writing to Halifax to convey the disappointment and concern that many local people feel about the potential loss of another high street banking facility in Bridgend.
This follows my recent correspondence with Santander after it announced plans to close its Bridgend town centre branch from Tuesday 12th May 2026. Santander responded by stating:
“I would like to reassure you that the decision to change or close branches is always difficult and only made after a thorough review. We take a range of factors into account, including where each branch is located, alternative local options and the way our customers choose to bank with us.
“Our impact assessment for Bridgend suggests that 91% of Bridgend customers use a variety of our services, including online, in addition to in-branch visits, and between January 2025 and June 2025 only 28 of our Bridgend branch customers made a general enquiry three times or more and only use our Bridgend branch.
“We remain committed to ensuring customers can safely bank with us through a range of channels.”
I will continue to engage with Santander on behalf of constituents and will keep residents updated when I receive a response from Halifax regarding its decision.
