Chris Elmore MP recently visited the National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) Station in Porthcawl to learn more about the vital work carried out by the team in keeping people safe along our coastline and at sea.

During his visit, Chris met with Station Manager Laurence, as well as watchkeepers Rod and Nat to gain an insight into the day-to-day operations of the team.

The Porthcawl NCI Station, housed in the former Pilot lookout tower next to the Lifeboat Station, opened in May 2015 and is now celebrating its 10th year of operation. The station is staffed by 47 qualified watchkeepers, who provide a 365-day visual and listening watch, assisting with incidents over the past decade ranging from paddle boarders in difficulty to light aircraft ditching in the sea. Since opening, the station has responded to 637 incidents, highlighting the critical role the station plays in coastal safety.

Speaking after the visit, Chris Elmore MP said:

“It was fantastic to meet Laurence, Rod, and Nat at Porthcawl NCI Station. Their work is vital, monitoring our coastline. Porthcawl is just one of many NCI stations across the UK, all providing a lifesaving service that keeps coastal communities safe. The team’s dedication and vigilance make a real difference every day, and it’s truly inspiring to see such commitment protecting people on our waters and along our shores.”

The National Coastwatch Institution provides a crucial service, monitoring radio channels, providing a listening watch in poor visibility, and coordinating with HM Coastguard and other emergency services when incidents occur.
