To mark the start of Mental Health Awareness Week 2025 (12–18 May), Chris Elmore MP for Bridgend & Porthcawl, met with Rachel Ashe MBE, the founder of the national initiative Mental Health Swims, at a special event in Parliament.

Mental Health Swims was created in 2019 after Rachel received a mental health diagnosis. Feeling overwhelmed by the thought of joining new groups or trying new activities, she found the courage to take a cold-water dip on New Year’s Day in Scotland — an experience that had a profoundly positive impact on her wellbeing. Motivated by that one swim, Rachel went on to start a monthly, inclusive swim meet at her local beach. From this small beginning, Mental Health Swims has grown into a nationwide peer-led movement, supporting thousands of people through community cold-water swimming.

This year’s Mental Health Awareness Week theme is ‘Community’, making it a fitting time to recognise the work of Mental Health Swims in creating welcoming, non-judgemental spaces where people experiencing mental health challenges can find support and connection.

The event in Parliament featured powerful contributions from speakers including Hayley Jarvis from the charity Mind, Dr Hussain Al-Zubaidi, and Rachel Ashe herself, now Managing Director of the organisation. Attendees also had the opportunity to view a short film produced with filmmaker Joby Newson, showcasing stories from Mental Health Swims community members across the UK and the positive impact the group has had on their lives.

Speaking after the event, Chris Elmore MP said:

“It was a real pleasure to meet Rachel and hear about the incredible work Mental Health Swims is doing across the UK — including Porthcawl. Creating inclusive, welcoming spaces is essential for supporting mental health. What started with one swim has become a powerful community movement, and that’s truly inspiring.”

Residents in the Bridgend and Porthcawl area will have the chance to get involved in local swims, with two sessions coming up in June:

  • 🌊 Newton Beach, Porthcawl – 21st June

  • 🌊 Rest Bay Beach, Porthcawl – 22nd June

Whether you’re new to cold-water swimming or simply looking for a supportive mental health community, these events are a great opportunity to get involved.
