Last Friday, 5th June, Chris Elmore MP was delighted to attend the Bridgend Unsung Heroes Awards, organised by the Bridgend Association of Voluntary Organisations (BAVO). The annual awards celebrate the outstanding contribution volunteers make to our local communities.

The awards recognise individuals and groups who give their time, skills and energy to support local charities, organisations and community projects—often without recognition.

The event forms part of Volunteers’ Week, a UK-wide celebration recognising the important role volunteers play in communities across the country.

Award Categories:

• Young Volunteer of the Year (14–25)
• Adult Volunteer of the Year
• Team of the Year (Community/Charity)
• Sports Volunteer of the Year
• Environmental Award
• Long Service Award (5+ years commitment)
• Trustee / Leadership Volunteer of the Year

Chris was honoured to present the Environmental Award and congratulated Alan Redfern on winning the category, thanking him for his dedication to helping keep local communities clean and well cared for.

Chris also paid tribute to Chris and Junior Hurley for their continued efforts to keep their community clean and tidy, as well as Debbie Davies from Wildmill Community Centre for her work educating young people about the environment, including how to care for it and grow their own vegetables and plants.

The awards highlighted the vital role volunteers play within local communities. From sports clubs and community groups to environmental projects and governance roles, volunteers continue to make a significant difference to the lives of others every day.

Speaking at the event, Chris Elmore MP said:

“It was a real privilege to attend this year’s Bridgend Unsung Heroes Awards and celebrate the incredible work being carried out by volunteers across our communities.

“The dedication, kindness and commitment shown by so many people is truly inspiring and a reminder of just how much volunteers contribute to community life.

“The event was also a superb way to round off Volunteers’Week and recognise the people who so often work quietly behind the scenes to support others and make a real difference every single day.”
