Chris Elmore MP for Bridgend & Porthcawl has warmly welcomed the announcement that Bridgend County Borough Council has purchased the Rhiw Shopping Centre in Bridgend, describing it as a “transformational moment for Bridgend town centre and its future.”

The acquisition gives the council a direct stake in the heart of the town, unlocking a major opportunity to accelerate regeneration, attract new investment and deliver long term renewal.

Chris Elmore MP said:
“I am absolutely delighted to see that this investment has been secured. It is a hugely positive step forward and a real vote of confidence in the future of Bridgend town centre.

With the new Bridgend College campus set to open later this year, Valleys to Coast relocating its operations to Wyndham House and with the significant investment going into the Rhiw, we are seeing real momentum build in our town centre. Bridgend is moving in the right direction, and this is a key part of that journey.”

The purchase opens the door to a wide range of regeneration opportunities, including potential new retail and market space, community facilities, improved public areas and additional accommodation. The council has confirmed that the Rhiw will continue operating while plans are developed, with existing traders fully supported and consulted throughout the process.

Chris added:
“I will continue to do all I can to support local councillors and partners, as I have done since I was elected, as the redevelopment of the Rhiw moves forward.

It’s imperative that we continue to work together to ensure Bridgend town centre is a great place for residents, businesses and visitors alike.”
