Grassroots sport in Wales is set to receive a major boost as part of a £100 million investment from the UK Labour Government. Chris Elmore, MP for Bridgend & Porthcawl, has welcomed the announcement, which will see £6.1 million dedicated to upgrading local sports facilities across Wales.
The funding will be used to improve pitches, changing rooms, goalposts, and floodlights, ensuring local clubs have the resources they need to grow and provide opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to take part in sport. The investment is targeted at areas that need it most, supporting increased access for under-represented groups, including women and girls, ethnic minority communities, and disabled athletes.
Chris Elmore MP said:
“This is a fantastic investment from the UK Government that will make a real difference to grassroots sport here in Wales. Local sports clubs are the heart of our communities, bringing people together, promoting health and well-being, and providing opportunities for young people to develop skills and confidence. This funding will help ensure that clubs across Bridgend & Porthcawl have the facilities they need to thrive.”
The investment is part of the UK Government’s Plan for Change, which aims to remove barriers to sport and encourage more people to lead active lifestyles. By improving local sports facilities, the government is helping to tackle health inequalities while creating a stronger, healthier future for communities across Wales.
Chris Elmore MP will also be meeting with representatives from the Premier League in the coming weeks to discuss further investment in grassroots football across Bridgend & Porthcawl. This ongoing commitment to local sport will help secure more funding and support for clubs in the area.
